Behind the Bench: A Conversation with Lab Manager Gary Lawson
The latest episode of The Starlab Deep Dive podcast takes a closer look at life in the lab, as told by someone who lives it every day. Gary Lawson, Lab Manager and Principal Learning Officer at Leeds Beckett University, shares how he found his path in science—and why the work being done in labs is more relevant than ever.
Not Just Pipettes and Paperwork
Science has long suffered from an image problem. For many, the phrase “lab work” brings to mind long hours of repetitive tasks in isolation. But Gary’s role tells a different story—one that’s hands-on, varied, and full of purpose.
As he puts it, “There’s no such thing as a typical day.” From supporting PhD students and fixing equipment to safety testing and even managing waste, Gary’s job blends scientific knowledge with practical problem-solving. And despite stepping into the role just before the UK’s first lockdown, he helped ensure research could resume safely and swiftly at his university.
From Pandemic Response to Propolis
Much of Gary’s recent work connects directly to the real world—from managing COVID-19 safety in the lab to researching viral presence in wastewater. He also supports early-stage research into alternative antibiotics sourced from bees, continuing a career-long interest in biology that’s anything but ordinary.
His research journey has included everything from maggot therapy for burn patients to cutting-edge cancer treatments.
“The projects have always had real-world outcomes,” Gary says. “That’s what’s kept me going.”
A Path Forged Through Passion
Gary’s entry into science wasn’t straightforward. Diagnosed with dyslexia in his teens, he found school difficult—except for science. Encouraging mentors and hands-on learning gave him the confidence to pursue biomedical sciences, and eventually, a research role working on parasitic diseases. Since then, he's climbed the ladder through curiosity, perseverance, and a clear focus on the human impact of his work.
