We run CPD accredited Pipette Training Sessions that can be held at your premises or at our laboratory in Milton Keynes.
Why is training important?
- Training is important because quality systems such as
- ISO 15189 have requirements for qualifications, training and competence. This is particularly important with pipettes as the pipetting technique used, as well as their handling, storage and maintenance, can have a major impact on the continued accuracy and precision of the pipette.

Training levels
INTRODUCTORY LEVEL
Specifically designed for those involved in everyday pipetting, such as lab techs, PhD students, scientific officers. Min. 4 / Max. 10 people per session:
- Fundamentals of dispensing
- Pipetting techniques
- Forward and reverse pipetting
- Physical influences on dispensed volume
- Pipette ergonomics and general PhysioCare concepts including RSI
- Understanding the importance of good pipetting techniques and the effects it can have on assays
- Practical to support the key learning objectives
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL
Specifically designed for lab technicians, scientific officers and laboratory Managers. Min. 4 / Max. 10 people per session:
- Review of the fundamentals of dispensing
- Cleaning and inspection of pipettes
- Common pipette fault-finding issues
- Demonstration of the effects that bad pipetting techniques can have on assays and results
- Performance / calibration check of a pipette
- Understanding the equipment needed for accurate calibration checks
- Understanding the terms 'Accuracy', 'Precision' and 'Uncertainty' in order to interpret the results of a calibration certificate
- Practical to support the key learning objectives
ADVANCED LEVEL
Designed for lab managers and quality personnel. Min. 2 / Max. 4 people per session:
- Overview of the fundamentals of dispensing
- Why calibrate?
- What calibration is, and what it is not Performance / calibration check of pipettes
- Specifications: Manufacturer's v ISO 8655 v internal SOP’s
- ISO 17025 – UKAS
- ISO 15189 – Medical Labs (UKAS / CPA)
- Calibration traceability
- Expressions of uncertainty
- How Starlab and the use of our calibration software CaliStar ensures compliance
