We are closing the loop!
We are thrilled that we have closed the material loop with our unique TipOne® recycling service. Because all TipOne® system components are made from polypropylene (PP), our service allows high quality recycling of returned TipOne® plastic.
As of January 2025, TipOne® racks made in Germany include post-consumer recyclate collected by our customers using the TipOne® recycling service.

The TipOne® closed-loop recycling service is currently available in Germany, Austria, France, Italy and UK only. However, some international dealers of Starlab products offer their own recycling services for polypropylene. To find out where, click the link below:
Our journey to closing loop.
Jul-25: TipOne® racks containing post-consumer TipOne® recyclate in the base are now on sale! TipOne® racks made in Germany are easily identified by the new-look shelf box which boasts a design that uses a lot less ink, and has labels made from recycled paper.
Jan-25: We have closed the recycling loop! TipOne® racks* made in Germany are made entirely from recycled plastic, including 75% post-consumer recyclate collected by customers using the TipOne® recycling service, in the rack's base.

Jan-25: TipOne® production in Germany begins, marking the start of the transition of moving TipOne® manufacturing from USA to Germany. The manufacturing move to Europe will lower our transport emissions.
Nov-24: Starlab receives the industry's first research allowance for sustainable recycling. The allowance honours our years of development work in the field of sustainable laboratory waste management. This confirms our path towards closed loop cycles for laboratory matrial.
Jun-24: Manufacturing racks with 25% recycled plastic in the base begins.
(Applies to all racks made in USA, June 2024 onwards.)
Jul-23: Manufacturing the clear polypropylene system components of TipOne® refills from 100% recycled plastic begins.
(Applies to all refill top and bottom shells and spacers, manufactured from July 2023 onwards.)
2021: TipOne® recycling service in partnership with REMONDIS begins, with long-term aim to reuse the plastic in our own manufactured products.
2016: First new TipOne® Sterile refills available, providing a plastic saving of 63% compared to the racked equivalent. (1000µl & 1250µl volumes provide 53% saving).
2015: Designed for recycling! All system components now made from polypropylene, and all paper labels removed. The TipOne® system was redesigned with closed-loop recycling in mind.
2015:Redesigned to save more plastic! The redesign provided a new look, and also reduced overall plastic use whilst maintaining quality. The new TipOne® racks acheive a 6% raw material reduction compared to the old-style racks.
2013: New pipette tips. Reduced raw material use for their manufacture compared to the equivalent older tips, without compromise to tip fit or quality.
1998: TipOne® is born. A pipette tip system designed to save plastic waste with its reusable rack and the first, easy to use refill system available on the market.

FAQs
Q: Why is closed-loop recycling better than regular recycling?
A: While all recycling helps reduce waste, closed-loop recycling goes further by keeping materials at the same quality and reusing them in the same products. This creates a sustainable cycle (that reduces the need for new raw materials, and lowers the carbon footprint) because high-quality recycled PP is used again and again for the same high-quality products.
Q: What happens if recycling collection targets are not met?
A: Starlab maintains a backup inventory to ensure production continues smoothly. However, successful closed-loop recycling does rely on participation from everyone—Starlab, our customers, and our recycling partner—to keep a steady supply of material.
Q: Is closed-loop recycling better than using bioplastics?
A: Closed-loop recycling and bioplastics are both sustainable options, but they work differently. Bioplastics turn waste (like used frying fat) into new materials, while closed-loop recycling keeps existing materials in use through a circular economy. Both approaches help reduce CO₂ emissions, but in different ways.
Q: Why is recycled plastic from a different source used for the transparent, refill components?
A: The TipOne® plastic we collect and recycle, is a mix of coloured (eg. blue rack base, yellow, red, blue, green tip wafers) and transparent PP (eg. refill packaging, rack lid). This isn’t suitable for making clear parts: transparent components require recyclate made only from transparent PP.
Q: What percentage of TipOne® recyclate is currently used for the TipOne® racks made in Germany?
A: The racks made in Germany are made entirely from recycled plastic. The rack base contains 75% TipOne® recyclate: so the 25% other material in the base, and the lid, is made with the recyclate 'from a different source'.
