The Underestimated Everyday Hero.

They are like the tyres on a car or the non-slip soles on shoes: inconspicuous, yet indispensable. Starlab, best known for its TipOne® pipette tips, is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its own glove brand StarGuard®.

Disposable gloves are among the most frequently used consumables in the laboratory. In 2023, the University of Cambridge reported an annual requirement of over four million nitrile gloves. Despite these numbers, gloves rarely take centre stage. ‘Gloves are like a good goalkeeper,’ says Klaus Ambos, Managing Director of Starlab International GmbH. ‘As long as everything works, you hardly notice them. But if they are missing or inadequate, you notice immediately.’

Gloves are the crucial point of contact between people and science. Wherever the hand meets life science, they provide safety to both user and sample. In June 2014, Starlab launched the first StarGuard® glove on the market. Right from the start, it impressed with its low dermatitis potential, as no accelerators were used in its manufacture. StarGuard® was thus specifically aimed at customers with sensitive skin.

Just a year later, Starlab modernised the range and established the StarGuard® family. Five models – Comfort, Protect, Protect+, Sensitive and Touch – covered a variety of laboratory applications. ‘From the outset, we wanted to offer the right glove protection for most application,’ says Ambos. High-quality materials, different colours for quick identification, the highest standards as PPE Category III, and outstanding chemical splash resistance quickly made the StarGuard® range a firm fixture in the laboratory.

Aakanksha Sinha, Technical Product Specialist at Starlab: ‘After ten years, StarGuard® is far more than a single product: it is an established brand, synonymous with quality, safety and reliability in research and everyday laboratory work.’

All gloves comply with EN ISO 374-1:2016 Type B, providing reliable splash protection against chemical risks. In addition, two of the gloves have an AQL of 0.65 so users can be sure of the expected quality and performance, and all gloves meet the requirements of EN ISO 374-5:2016, offering protection against bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Starlab is committed not only to quality but also to sustainability. The StarGuard® factories are actively engaged in reducing the environmental impact caused by the manufacture of gloves. Through efficient production lines, the use of solar energy and compliance with ISO 14001, the factories minimise energy and water consumption. Furthermore, the gloves are delivered in recyclable packaging and shipped directly from the manufacturing site to the Starlab warehouse, which greatly reduces transportation requirements by cutting out the usual middle distribution warehouse.

Additionally, StarGuard® Comfort gloves are supplied in larger 250-piece boxes (in addition to standard 100 and 200-piece formats), further reducing packaging materials and optimising shipping efficiency. Starlab also places great emphasis on ethical practices throughout the supply chain and ensures that all production sites comply with ILO (International Labor Organisation) standards and that ethical and responsible manufacturing practices are verified by WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) certification.
