Information on the disposal and return of batteries and waste batteries

Batteries and rechargeable batteries must not be disposed of in household waste. Not only do they contain valuable raw materials, but they also contain pollutants that can endanger the environment and health. Help protect the environment by disposing of used batteries properly.

Meaning of the battery symbols

On batteries, you will find the following icons:

  • Crossed-out bin icon
Meaning: Batteries do not belong in household waste.
  • Battery recycling symbol

Chemical signs (e.g. Cd, Hg, Pb): these indicate the pollutants they contain:

  • Cd = cadmium — contains more than 0.002 percent cadmium by mass
  • Hg = mercury — contains more than 0.0005 percent by mass of mercury
  • Pb = lead — contains more than 0.004 percent lead by mass

Purpose of separate collection

The separate collection of used batteries allows:

  • The reuse or recycling of valuable raw materials.
  • The avoidance of environmental and health damage caused by improper disposal.
  • Compliance with legal requirements for the protection of the environment and people.

Preparation for reuse, conversion and recycling

Please only hand in completely discharged batteries and rechargeable batteries. If possible, remove batteries from devices before disposing of them, as this simplifies the recycling process.

Returning used batteries

You are legally obliged to return used batteries:

1. Return and collection points

You can return your used batteries free of charge to the following locations:

  • At all public collection points (e.g. recycling centre)
  • In other outlets that sell batteries

2. Return to manufacturer

  • We fulfil our extended manufacturer obligations (EPR) by participating in the battery compliance scheme (BSC) Valpak (https://www.valpak.co.uk/), which is officially approved and takes over the collection, treatment and recycling of the batteries we place on the market.
  • The return is free of charge for you.
